Some states such as Arizona, Utah, and Puerto Rico are experimenting with allowing nonlawyers and even firms like KPMG to own law practices, often with AI built in.

The question is whether this will create real efficiencies for clients or simply shift incentives in a different way. Law firms have long argued that ethics flow from the profession itself, but in practice, billing often puts lawyers at odds with clients.

It is an open experiment. Better outcomes? Worse? As with most good laws, the answer is it depends.
